Vaccine Eligibility

At this time, we do not have enough vaccine for everyone who wants one. Vaccination appointments are limited to people who live or work in Alameda County. Vaccine is being prioritized for those who are most risk for severe illness, which could result in hospitalization or death; or those who cannot work from home and are at high risk for exposure because they engage with the public directly. If you are not a member of one the groups listed below, please wait your turn.

We expect to have more vaccine in the coming months.

Alameda County is currently vaccinating:
  1. People over the age of 65, because they are at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19
  2. People who are at high risk for contracting/spreading the virus because of their work environment—this includes workers in health care, food/agriculture, emergency services, and education/child care
If you work in one of the sectors listed in #2, but do not have direct contact with clients/public or have the option to work from home, we ask that you please wait your turn.
Eligibility criteria will continue to be updated based on capacity and vaccine availability. The following two tables will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

Morbidity/Mortality-Based Prioritization
(projected to start mid-March 2021)

Anticipated to begin on March 15, Alameda County health care providers may use their clinical judgement to vaccinate individuals age 16-64 who are deemed to be at the very highest risk for morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 as a direct result of one or more of the following severe health conditions:

  • Cancer, current with debilitated or immunocompromised state
  • Chronic kidney disease, stage 4 or above
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), oxygen dependent
  • Down Syndrome
  • Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies (excluded hypertension)
  • Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe Obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2)
  • Sickle Cell Disease
  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, hemoglobin A1C level greater than 7.5%s

This list of eligible conditions is subject to change as additional scientific evidence is published and as the California Public Health Department obtains and analyzes additional state-specific data.

Age-Based Prioritization

Future phases will move to an age-based prioritization pending additional guidance from California State.

Alameda County COVID-19 Vaccine Values and Principles

  • Provide transparent and accurate information to help people make vaccine decisions.
  • Lead with equity and data (e.g., race/ethnicity, geography, socioeconomic factors, and critical populations)
  • Ensure safe and equitable vaccine distribution throughout the county.
  • Leverage all venues and partners for broad distribution (e.g., hospitals, clinics, private practice, pharmacies, community-based points of distribution [PODs])

Local Planning

Per State and Federal policy, COVID-19 vaccine will be administered to specific populations in phases and community sites would be in the last phase. Local planning will leverage lessons learned from flu clinics, which were modified to accommodate COVID-19 considerations, data on need, and community feedback, as well as our 2009 experience with H1N1.

This is a rapidly evolving situation and we are following closely the work of California’s vaccine planning task force, which is determining many of the policies and procedures for which vaccine gets distributed when, how, and to whom. The State’s decisions will be implemented through our local plans.

  • Alameda County COVID-19 Vaccination Plan (Submitted Dec. 1, 2020)
  • Community Advisory Group

With authorization from the State of California, Alameda County is now able to provide vaccines to all Health Care Workers in Phase 1a, regardless of the Tier.

Medical volunteers: Please complete both of the following registration forms.

  1. Register with the California Health Corps here and be sure to sign up for the “Alameda County Unit.”
  2. Sign up with Alameda Count through this electronic form. You will be asked to submit to a brief background check.

At this time, we are fortunate to have a large number of volunteer offers which may cause delays in our vetting system and background check process.
