Just Tested Positive for COVID?
Treatment Can Prevent Hospitalization for High Risk Individuals

IMPORTANT NOTE:

On Saturday, June 25th, Alameda County re-aligned with California’s Face Masking Guidance and lifted its local masking Health Officer Order. Masking in most indoor public settings and businesses is strongly recommended. For details on the latest masking message, refer to  Alameda County’s Press Release here, and visit the face masking webpage to learn more.

Testing continues to be a critical resource to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to keep you and your loved ones safe. If you are experiencing COVID-like symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19:

  1. Get tested using one or more of these testing options: At-home test, Rapid Antigen or Rapid PCR test or PCR.
  2. Isolate while you wait and if tested positive. For more information click here.
  3. If necessary, seek treatment. Learn more on the treatment page.

PCR
Test

Strengths:

  • Results in as little as 15 minutes
  • Good for checking infection status frequently
  • Available for use at home

Strengths:

  • Most accurate test type, even early in infection

Limitations

  • May miss some early infections when low levels of virus are present. Read the instructions carefully and test twice if recommended

Limitations

  • Results can take 24-72 hours
  • Will miss infections that happen between getting tested and getting results
  • Results can come back positive for weeks, due to detection of old virus particles

At-home COVID-19 self-tests provide rapid results and can be taken anywhere, regardless of your vaccination status or whether you have symptoms. Here are some ways you can obtain free at-home self-tests.

  1. Order from the U.S Federal government through USPS.
  2. Medicare members can visit Medicare.gov for participating pharmacies and present your Medicare ID card at the pharmacy counter.
  3. Medi-Cal member may contact Medi-Cal Rx to locate an in-network pharmacy to obtain an at-home test at no cost. See details on the State Medi-Cal website for how to submit a claim.
  4. Your health care/insurance provider is required to offer a certain number of free tests monthly or reimburse for those tests. Tests may also be FSA/HSA-eligible. Contact your health care or insurance provider to learn more.

Free Community Testing Sites

Community testing sites are free. You do not need a doctor’s note or medical insurance to get tested, you will not be asked about your immigration status, and most test results are available within 2-5 days.

Most testing sites are able to test all ages unless otherwise indicated. All CORE-run testing sites can test ages four and older. Parents of infants are encouraged to check with their primary care providers before testing.

If you have medical insurance, you should call your doctor/healthcare provider. If you do not have medical insurance, please schedule an appointment at any of our Community Testing Sites or find a Testing Event near you.  Community testing sites cannot take new walk up requests for testing 30 minutes before closing.
