Isolation Guidance

How long do I need to stay home if I have COVID-19?

Alameda County is aligned with CDPH and CDC respiratory virus guidance.

Respiratory Virus Guidance Snapshot

  • Stay home if you have COVID-19 symptoms until you have not had a fever for 24 hours (without using fever reducing medication) AND other COVID-19 symptoms are improving.
  • After you return to your normal activities, you may still be able to spread the virus to others.* Take precautions for the next 5 days, when you will be around others, to help reduce this risk:
    • Wear a well-fitting, high-quality mask
    • Practice physical distancing
    • Avoid contact with people at higher-risk for severe COVID-19. Higher-risk individuals include the elderly and those who live in congregate care facilities.
    • After this 5-day period, you are typically much less likely to be contagious. However, some people, especially people with weakened immune systems, can continue to spread the virus for a longer period of time.
  • Seek Treatment. If you have symptoms, contact a healthcare provider as soon as you test positive, especially if you are at higher risk for severe COVID-19
*You can be infectious 2 days before symptoms begin or you test positive (if no symptoms) through Day 10. (Day 0 is the date of symptoms or positive test).
Some workplaces are subject to the Cal/OSHA Aerosol Transmissible Diseases (ATD) Standard (PDF) and should consult those regulations for additional requirements.

Healthcare Settings

Healthcare personnel in general acute care hospitals, acute psychiatric hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities should follow recommendations as set forth in AFL 25-01. Healthcare personnel working in settings not covered by AFL 25-01 may also follow the guidance outlined in AFL 25.01. Healthcare facilities should follow the guidance for management of exposed or infected patients/residents in CDC’s Infection Control Guidance: SARS-CoV-2.
