Health Care Providers: How to become a vaccinating organization

We encourage all Alameda County health care providers to enroll in CalVax, the State’s system for requesting COVID-19 vaccine. If you have already enrolled as a provider and have vaccinated your staff, please begin vaccinating your patients aged 65 and older.

Important things to know about CalVax:
  • CalVax replaces the COVIDReadi system
  • CalVax allows providers to enroll in the California COVID-19 Vaccination Program, order vaccines, update account information, and manage vaccine reporting tasks
  • You will still need to register for CAIR2
  • If you are already enrolled in COVIDReadi, you do not need to re-enroll in CalVax and your account has been transitioned
    • You should have received an invite from no-reply-calvax@cdph.ca.gov to reset their password.
    • If you have not received an invite, email to covidcallcenter@dcph.ca.gov or call 833 502 1245, option 2.
  • Once your CalVax application has been approved by the State, Alameda County will be able to approve your requests for vaccine.
  • You will need a standard medical grade refrigerator or freezer to receive Moderna’s vaccine, similar to what you would use for influenza or shingles vaccines.
  • You will be required to enroll in CAIR2, the updated California Immunization Registry for reporting patient immunizations.
  • CalVax includes reminder tools for the second dose of vaccines.
  • You will be able to request allocations of doses in multiples of 10.
  • Vaccines will be delivered to your clinic weekly.

Provider Training and Educational Materials

On 2/5/21, ACPHD aligned with the Department of Developmental Services and California Department of Public Health in considering certain family caregivers for the disabled as “Healthcare Workers.” These family caregivers can be vaccinated as part of Phase 1a.

Family caregivers will self-attest their eligibility when they make their vaccination appointment. No attestation letter will be required when the family caregiver arrives for their vaccination appointment.

Beginning on 3/15/21, healthcare providers may use their clinical judgment to vaccinate individuals aged 16-64 years who are deemed to be at the very highest risk for morbidity and mortality from COVID-19 as a direct result of one or more severe health conditions. Please note that the list of highest risk conditions is subject to change as new clinical data becomes available.

Healthcare providers are encouraged to vaccinate these individuals within their own clinics or healthcare systems whenever possible. If timely vaccination in your own clinic or within your own healthcare system is not possible, please advise a patient to seek COVID-19 vaccination at a site run by Alameda County.

People with highest risk conditions will self-attest their eligibility when they make their vaccination appointment. No attestation letter will be required when they arrive for their vaccination appointment.

Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) Calls and Webinars

During COCA Calls/Webinars, subject matter experts present key emergency preparedness and response topics, followed by meaningful Q&A with participants. Each COCA Call/Webinar will offer the most up-to-date information and guidance for clinicians. Continuing Education is available for most calls/webinars.
